OUR HISTORY

Glen Oaks Baptist Church originated on 5.23 acres of land purchased by Istrouma Baptist Church, the Mother of Trinity, Winbourne, Victoria, and Broadmoor Baptist Church located on Maplewood Drive in Baton Rouge, LA. The land and pavement were purchased by Istrouma Baptist Church at an estimated cost of $20,000. Initially, an army barracks served as the church's first building, which was utilized as both a chapel and Sunday school classes. Prior, to the usage of the army barracks, private homes served as the meeting place for Sunday school classes. When purchasing the land, Istrouma Baptist Church envisioned a growing church, which included not only the chapel but also a parking lot and recreational area.

Dr. Sam C. Rushing, served 23 years as a pastor of Istrouma Baptist Church. Upon his retirement from Istrouma Baptist Church, Dr. Rushing made available his services in establishing Glen Oaks Mission, which began on April 7, 1963. In October 1963, the mission became a full-grown church, which is now known as Glen Oaks Community Baptist Church.

However, what may initially appear as a tragedy, God turned into a blessing, as the church was able to remodel the buildings into the beautiful edifices they are today. Glory to God!
